Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of biology, medicine, and quantitative sciences. Biomedical informatics researchers develop new methods to integrate and analyze vast amounts of data generated in the laboratory, clinical and translational research, clinical encounters, and population studies.

The goals of the Department of Biomedical Informatics are to (1) promote excellence in biomedical informatics research, (2) collaborate with biomedical researchers in developing new quantitative methods that enable the formulation and testing of original hypotheses, (3) train the next generation of biomedical informatics specialists, and (4) interface with engineering, mathematics, information and computer science communities, serving as a hub for quantitative scientists focused on biomedical research.

This department leads multiple state, federally, and non-profit funded biomedical research projects, which are focused on the integration, analysis, and sharing of biomedical and health care data for the scientific community, as well as patient-centered research. In addition, the department runs a complex computational infrastructure that allows access and analysis of these data in a privacy-preserving manner.

The Systems & Cloud Administrator is responsible for the administration and management of all applications, systems, and components supporting mission-critical registration and data dissemination functions used by over 5,000 users across California. The incumbent is a highly skilled IT professional responsible for the design, implementation, and management of complex cloud-based systems and infrastructure. This role requires a deep understanding of cloud computing, systems administration, web administration, networking, security, and operations. The incumbent will be responsible for managing and maintaining a cloud infrastructure, ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of cloud-based systems, with firm control over the usage and costs. Possesses strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Will work on projects of small to large size at all levels of complexity.

Applies advanced systems infrastructure concepts and campus, medical center or Office of the President or institutional objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Selects methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Gives presentations to associated team and other technical units. Evaluates new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost / benefit analyses. May lead a team of systems / infrastructure professionals.

• Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five years of relevant IT experience with cloud operations and systems administration experience required.

• In-depth knowledge of cloud platforms (preferably Azure) and their core services.

• Advanced experience with cloud automation and deployment technologies

• Five (5) or more years of experience in systems administration, with a strong focus on cloud computing, Linux, and Windows.

• Hands-on experience with security best practices, identity and access management, firewall policies, and WAF administration.

• Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Expert knowledge of operating system internals, communication protocols, and system utilities (such as common Unixvariants, Windows, and other more specialized operating systems.)

• Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems. Expert ability for objective analysis of complex network and systems architecture in the case of planning and root cause reviews.

• Knowledge and technical expertise with Microsoft Active Directory, Windows computing/networkenvironments and Windows scripting languages.

• Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Advanced programming and/or scripting skills in Python, Ruby, Bash, and/or Powershell scriptinglanguages.

• Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software. Demonstrated experience with HIPAA, FISMA, or NIST 800-53 compliance standards/regulations.

• Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions. Expert in cross-platform OS and application integration (Linux/Windows)
