The Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS) seeks a Research Manager to support our research programs. MIDAS is an organization under the University of Michigan Office of the Vice President for Research. Our mission is to advance research in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), and enable their transformative use in a wide range of research disciplines to achieve lasting scientific and societal impact. We lead strategic thrusts in data science and AI research; enable collaborative grants, provide research training, and build research resources. Through these approaches, we facilitate the development of cutting-edge methods and the application of these methods to important problems in all research disciplines. We foster a world-class data science and AI research community at U-M and promote its diversity, equity and inclusion. Responsibilities*
The Research Manager will be a relationship builder, who will facilitate the development of research teams and projects. This person will also support pre-award and post-award activities in a broad sense. Specifically:
Manage MIDAS resources such as funding programs, important datasets, and other tools to support researchers and disseminate research best practices.
Carry out research development activities to foster innovative research ideas and teams that will lead to collaborative grant proposals and research projects.
Coordinate the submission of major grant proposals led by MIDAS or our faculty collaborators
Participate in research, training and capacity development projects either as a coordinator or technical contributor, based on the interest and skills of the candidate and the needs of the projects
Coordinate student research projects to support faculty research and "data and AI for social good" projects
Communication and Administrative:
For MIDAS research and related activities, collect data and assist in evaluation in order to assess program effectiveness, develop contents for reports;
Develop scientific contents for website and newsletter, promotional materials and other forms of dissemination.
Required Qualifications*
Master's degree in a data science / AI related field;
A combination of three or more years of employment experience in one or more of the following areas:
Data management and / or analytics;
Research project management;
Research development;
Pre-award / post-award support;
Conceptual understanding of data science and AI along with basic analytical skills;
Professionalism, strong work ethic, demonstrated sense of responsibility, discretion and reliability.
Ability to set priorities, exercise initiative, solve problems, adapt to changes quickly, make independent judgments, and work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; timely and consistent communication and follow-through with the leadership, the team and stakeholders;
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to drive consensus;
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
Demonstrated computer literacy in common Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, and Drive) and the ability to learn specialized software.
Desired Qualifications*
PhD degree in a data science / AI related field;
Broad interest in data science and AI and their application domains;
Familiarity with the U-M research environment.
