Job Description
The Tutorial Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Promise Zone will oversee all day-to-day operations of the lab and associated classrooms of the Promise Zone tutoring center at our local high school in partnership with the Grand Rapids Promise Zone Director. They will create and ensure a safe, positive learning environment for high school students seeking tutorial assistance to promote college readiness.
Primary responsibilities include tutoring students individually and in groups, as well as recruiting, assessing, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and mentoring professional and student tutors to assist in the center. This position will work closely with high school teaching staff and administration as well as GRCC department heads/faculty to stay abreast of curriculum, develop materials and resources to help support learning, and build academic confidence within a diverse learning community at the high school(s). This role will also work collaboratively with the other GRCC Tutorial Coordinators and the Grand Rapids Promise Zone.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supervise and coordinate tutoring in the Promise Zone tutoring lab(s)
- Consistently collaborate with high school teaching staff and administration and GRCC department heads/faculty to ensure continuity of material and methods, and to stay knowledgeable about current curriculum, teaching methods, procedures, and related course materials
- Coordinate with GRCC tutorial centers to ensure consistency in practice and alignment with GRCC service standards and policies
- Build and maintain a safe, encouraging, and positive learning environment for a diverse student population and develop tutoring strategies to meet students’ unique needs
- Work with teaching staff and administration to promote the availability and use of the tutoring center(s)
- Tutor students individually and in groups to support learning in Mathematics and English both inside and outside of the classroom
- Recruit, select, hire, support, and evaluate professional and student tutors to assist in the center(s). Tutors should be highly qualified to assist and prepare students with diverse educational, demographic, and socio-economic backgrounds for success in college-level Mathematics and English/Language Arts.
- Schedule, evaluate and mentor professional and student tutors and adjust tutor staffing and scheduling as needed to complement existing high school tutoring services
- Monitor established tutorial center budgets, as needed, in coordination with Grand Rapids Promise Zone Director
- Work in close collaboration with GRCC Math Prep and Learning Lab, Language Arts, and other Tutorial Coordinators to ensure students are prepared for college-level courses
- Provide preparation and support for standardized testing as applicable at the high school level
- Develop strong partnerships with GRCC Placement Testing and provide tutoring and preparation for students who wish to take required GRCC placement tests
- Provide input and support summer academic programming for Promise Zone eligible students, including summer school support
- Provide regular communication and feedback with teachers regarding individual student needs
- Regularly attend GRCC Tutorial Coordinator departmental meetings, as well as Promise Zone meetings as needed or requested
- Collaborate directly with the Grand Rapids Promise Zone Director to ensure alignment with the needs of the Grand Rapids Promise Zone
- Conduct program assessment and evaluation as requested
- Stay current with best practices and research in learning theories and practices
- Work collaboratively with the Grand Rapids Promise Zone, GRCC, high school(s), and district to continuously enhance services and support student success initiatives.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by Associate Dean of Student Learning Resources and/or the Grand Rapids Promise Zone Director.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Educational Credentials
- Master’s degree required, in Mathematics or English, or a related field of study.
Work Experience
- A minimum of two years of experience teaching/tutoring Mathematics or English at the high school-and/or college-level is preferred
- Experience overseeing Math or English tutors is preferred
- Experience working with a diverse community of learners is required
- Experience with web-based educational systems and assistive technology is preferred
- Bilingual (English and Spanish or another language) preferred

- Computer literacy, including the ability to learn and maintain up-to-date skills in computer technology: student information systems (PeopleSoft), Microsoft Office, Google Suite, EAB Navigate, and other software used by the College to support and/or track student success
- Proven ability to provide excellent customer service in a demanding work environment
