Mission:
The MUSEUM OF CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND is a non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring, preserving, and exhibiting objects of historical or cultural value to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Our mission is to document and provide education to promote the islands’ people, culture, and heritage.
Vision:
The MUSEUM OF CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND strives to be the authority of both knowledge and preservation of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, engaging a diverse audience by presenting objects and experiences designed to evoke wonder, stimulate curiosity, educate, and inform residents, visitors, and partners to share the islands’ future.
Reporting to the President of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Museum of Chincoteague Island’s nonprofit organization, staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. Responsibilities include:
Operations : Ensure the Museum is open and staffed during posted hours of operation.
Recruit, train, schedule, and retain a team of volunteers necessary for the operation of the Museum.
Capture, record, and report accurate visitation counts and other metrics necessary for assessing the success of the Museum in achieving its mission.
Oversee the upkeep and maintenance of the buildings, gardens, and courtyard.
Purchase and maintain proper inventory of supplies for the Museum’s daily operation.
Act as primary liaison with all vendors and vendor contracts regarding services associated with Museum’s operations such as tech support, cleaning services, office equipment, etc.
Maintain organized files (paper or computer) with adequate back up files.
Ensure Museum compliance with all regulations, laws, and local ordinances in the daily operation of the Museum and its events.
Assist the Board on other duties as may be assigned and serve on Collections, Development, and Finance Committees.
Lead, coach, develop, and retain the Museum’s staff.
Fundraising and Development:
Implement and execute the strategic goals devised by the Board for cultivating and generating individual and corporate sponsorships, as well as membership.
Assist the Development Committee with building the Museum’s Endowment Fund.
Expand local and regional revenue generating and fundraising activities. Marketing and Public Relations
Implement and execute marketing strategies and tactics devised by the Development Committee for the purpose of promoting Museum events and visitor attractions.
Create, schedule, and lead student field trips at the museum and outreach opportunities (e.g. Career Days) at schools.
Produce and coordinate all written communications to constituents (emails, letters, press releases, exhibit descriptions, etc.) that are of professional, error-free quality.
Deliver well-designed public presentations about the Museum to outside groups interested in learning about the Museum and its mission.
Position the Museum as an important community asset and provide leadership for creating a positive image within the community.
Finances:
Ensure all payables and receivables are posted to the correct accounts and are processed in a timely manner with well-organized records.
Understand, manage, and adhere to the Board approved annual operating budget.
Assist the Museum’s Treasurer in developing an annual budget for submission to the Board for approval.
Qualifications Specific requirements include:
Undergraduate degree in a related field, ideally with at least 5 years of management experience in a nonprofit.
Strong management, leadership, and organizing skills with the ability to prioritize and simultaneously execute multiple priorities.
Past success working with a Board of Directors or equivalent.
Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
Action-oriented, self-directed, adaptable, and innovative approach to running a nonprofit organization
Successfully managed fundraising strategies and tactics, including but not limited to grant writing, making presentations to funders and foundations, and executing fundraising events.
Experience working with QuickBooks Accounting Software, Microsoft Office Suite, & CRM Databases; preferred.
Job Specifications :
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for office work, as well as stand for periods of time for the Museum Store, programs, tours, etc.
Must be able to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, computer printer, etc.
Must be able to communicate with board members, staff, volunteers, community partners, and the public on Museum matters and exchange accurate information in these situations.
Must be able to move items up to 25 pounds.
Pay/Benefits:
Starting Salary: $55,000-$65,000 per year based on qualifications and prior experience with 40-hours work week April-November and 30-hour work week December-March.
1.5 hours PTO accrued weekly and available for use after 90-day probation period with potential blackout dates. Max 40 hours PTO can be carried over to next year.
