REPORTS TO: Initiative Director, Global Electricity
POSITION SUMMARY
The Program Officer, Global Electricity works closely with the Initiative Director to co-develop grantmaking strategies and associated grant portfolios that advance the transition of the international power sector to clean energy. This position will play a key role in shaping and executing strategies that support policymakers and advocates working to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission policies quickly and equitably.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management
- In partnership with their Initiative Director, develop strategies and associated grantmaking plans to decarbonize the international power sector, particular focus on the phase-out of coal-fired power in key geographies which include Brazil and Southeast Asia
- Write memos and presentations to communicate proposals on current or new focus areas to internal staff and the board
- Work with potential grantee organizations to solicit proposals for possible funding; develop concise and accurate summaries of funding requests; and answer substantive questions about the proposals
- Develop a complete and coherent rationale for funding proposals
- Conduct site visits to current and potential grantees; attend meetings and conferences
- Monitor progress on approved grants and strategies by reviewing interim grant reports from grantees
- Provide timely sector and strategy research, updates, summary reports, presentations, and regular updates for senior staff and clients
- Collaborate with the team to define and prioritize core quantitative and qualitative key performance indicators to support the theory of change
- Design, create, and maintain an efficient system for tracking core metrics
- Contribute to both an internal and grantee culture of evidence-based learning
- Inform the team and board of program developments, including the effectiveness of individual grants, strategies, and opportunities for future improvements
Partnership Development
- Lead through collaboration, both inside and outside the organization under the direction of the Initiative Director
- Work with the Initiative Director and teams across the organization and experts in the field to refine and improve the program's overall strategy
- Participate in joint efforts with other funders and affinity groups of foundations to determine collaboration opportunities to achieve shared goals
- Keep abreast of the funding landscape to determine emerging trends, areas of interest, current funding trends, and emerging opportunities
SALARY
Energy Innovation provides a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, with local adjustments made for candidates outside of the San Francisco and D.C. offices due to the cost of living. The target salary range is $160,000-$180,000 for San Francisco or D.C. Currently, all staff local to the D.C. or San Francisco offices go into the office one to three days a week.
Equity is incredibly important to the organization, and a pay audit for equity is completed annually.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- 7+ years of relevant experience in a role focused on climate, energy, and/or policy
- Knowledge of or experience in global grantmaking through first-hand experience in government, nonprofits, and/or philanthropy
- Knowledge or experience with the climate and clean energy field landscape, as well as advocacy strategies, tactics, and key leverage points to advance policy
- Familiarity in the clean energy, power sector, or the global coal-fired powered industry which can include relevant experience in regulation, power utilities, or finance
- Knowledge of the policy landscape of one or more countries, including Brazil, Indonesia and/or Southeast Asia
- Ability to develop strategies and prioritize resources to maximize impact
- Strong research, data analysis, and synthesis skillset
- Ability to prioritize and be flexible in a fast-paced, constantly evolving, and collaborative environment
- Effective and flexible interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Detail orientation with strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25%)

ABOUT US
Climate change is governed by physical facts—about carbon sources, accumulation, impacts, and timing, and more importantly, about solutions that work. These facts must inform strategy: they show that avoiding dangerous climate change is only possible through strong policy to cut carbon, promptly, in the biggest countries.
To address these issues, Energy Innovation was established in 2012 as a clean energy and environmental policy firm to provide timely research and analysis on low-carbon energy policy options to policy makers, thought leaders, and members of the media.
