About Us:
The Federation of Italian American Organizations of Brooklyn Ltd., also known as F.I.A.O. Brooklyn, was founded in 1977 through the collaborative efforts of numerous Italian American organizations to preserve the Italian American heritage and culture, to promote and inspire a positive image and legacy of Italian Americans, and to create stronger relationships within our multi-cultural society.
Today, FIAO is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all individuals and families in the Brooklyn community and beyond, with a particular focus on immigrants, seniors, and youth. FIAO employs 450 community members and benefits from many volunteers to provide a gamut of free services that include social services, mental health services, counseling, legal assistance, educational after-school programs, multicultural community initiatives and neighborhood improvement projects. These services are supported with New York City and State funding, as well as private donations and corporate grants.
Additionally, FIAO owns and operates its flagship 44,000 square feet state of the art multi-cultural Community Center, Il Centro. With its offices, classrooms, swimming pool, fitness facilities, library, sports gymnasium and large multipurpose community space, Il Centro has empowered thousands of community residents to actively participate in a hub of opportunities for greater understanding and appreciation of each other’s diversity, leading each to work collectively to enrich their own lives and the lives of all in the community.
Position Overview:
FIAO Brooklyn seeks a dynamic, experienced, strategic leader with exceptional management skills to serve as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Working and reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will be responsible for leading the execution of FIAO’s long-term development strategy with a focus on expanded services and increased fund raising.
As the primary communicator for FIAO, the CEO is expected to establish strong relationships with members, employees, governmental and non-governmental agencies, public elected officials, private donors and the community-at-large.
The CEO will oversee the development and execution of a superior management plan to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our organization. The management plan will include quality services, activities, standards, practices, program evaluation, and contractual alignment. The individual in this position will oversee and inspire a staff of 450 +, will be responsible for maintaining and growing the budget, will provide guidance and oversight, affirming the organization's commitment to excellence and continuous enhancement.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership and Governance:
- Provides data regarding the external environment to senior managers, guides and helps them in formulating, implementing, and evaluating and reformulating strategies that align with FIAO’s overall mission.
- Reviews, assesses, and approves specific strategic projects and plans that drive performance.
- Proactively updates the Board on FIAO's operations, Il Centro Community Center's services, and other factors influencing the organization's reputation.
- Identifies, evaluates, and communicates internal and external issues affecting the organization to the Board.
- Monthly reporting to the Board Committees of Management and Development, as well as during regularly scheduled meetings with the entire Board.
- Provides essential staff support to committees to help them properly fulfill their functions.
- Oversees the planning and coordination of Board and Committee meetings, guiding the establishment of meeting agendas.
Operational Planning and Management:
- Supervises and manages the Executive Director of Funded Programs and the Executive Director of the Community Center who are responsible for the organization’s efficient and effective day-to-day operations.
- Fosters transparent communication with public and private funders, as well as collaborating entities, to advance the organization's mission and foster a culture of trust.
- Supervises appropriate communications among staff, volunteers, the Board, and its committees to facilitate effective operation.
- Leads and motivates staff, enhancing employee engagement to develop a high-performance managerial team.
- Oversees the planning, execution, and evaluation of services to ensure effectiveness.
- Ensures that organization programs align with the mission and reflect board priorities.
- Demonstrates unwavering commitment to program and service quality, emphasizing operational ethics.
- Serves as the primary media spokesperson, preserving the positive image of the organization.
- Maintains effective relationships with external organizations, including human services, non-profits, medical and legal entities, and other communities.
Human Resources Oversight:
- Recommends and implements the organizational structure for FIAO staff, adhering to parameters set by the Board.
- Oversees job responsibilities and staff requirements for employees.
- Oversees recruitment, hiring, training, development, compensation, and termination of staff.
- Oversees the administration of a comprehensive human resources program, including position descriptions, performance standards, and performance appraisals.
- Responsible for the administrative policies and procedures governing the organization's functions.
Financial Planning and Fundraising Development:
- Supervises the planning, execution, and assessment of funded and center services for effectiveness.
- Collaborates with the Development Committee of the Board to strategize, prioritize, and implement fundraising efforts.
- Ensures the organization has comprehensive and strategic fundraising plans to cultivate and engage both individual and institutional donors, whether private or public.
- Develops an annual operating budget in collaboration with the Executive Directors, implementing necessary changes to ensure the organization’s stability.
- Oversees all other financial matters, including operational and capital budgeting, ongoing performance, ensuring that all activities are conducted with the highest ethical standards to guarantee accountability and legal compliance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree. Master’s Degree preferred.
- Proven experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization or public sector
- Minimum of 5-10 years of demonstrated success in organizational development and leadership.
- Strong strategic vision and the ability to lead organizational growth and development.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and financial management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with and inspire confidence among a wide range of stakeholders.
- Passion for and commitment to the FIAO of Brooklyn mission.
- Emphatic, exhibiting sound judgement, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of the Italian Language is a plus, but not required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $150,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
